Security grille safety: what you need to know

WHAT ARE SECURITY GRILLES?

Security grilles are security devices or security gates that are installed over a range of openings, most commonly windows and doorways. Unlike other similar security products, such as roller shutters, there are no complications with any mechanical parts or possibility of electrical faults. This makes security grilles a strong and safe option to protect homes and businesses.

SECURITY GRILLE SAFETY: IS THERE ANYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Security grilles are a very safe and robust solution but, as with most products, if abused there is risk of injury. Cross-Guard offer different types of security grilles and different security grille add-ons to prevent any injuries such as slips and trips.

It’s always good to be safety conscious so, if you are, we’re here to tell you security grilles are a good choice not just for security, but also for safety. If you’re looking at having security grilles over the doorway of your business, and you own for instance retail premises, you might be thinking about shoppers potentially tripping over the bottom of a security grille track. Well, that’s not the case! We have lots of different track options that won’t compromise health and safety in doorways, which we’ll discuss in this article.

In addition, if you choose retractable security grilles, you may be concerned that if you stack the grille back out of the way when not in use, someone could toy with the device and get their fingers stuck. Again, this is not a risk of security grilles, as they lock into place even when stacked back.

LIFT UP TRACKS FOR RETRACTABLE SECURITY GRILLES

Our CX1 and CX2 security grilles have a lift up track option, which is where a secure grille is installed in a doorway, with a security grille track that can lift up and out of the way. The security grille track then rests against the grille stack while your security grille remains open.

CHOOSING A LOCK BACK DEVICE FOR YOUR SECURITY GRILLE LIFT UP TRACK

If you do choose a security grille that has the lift up track feature, you may also want to consider the lock back device which we can also offer. A security grille lock back device enables a lift up track to lock back against the grille stack when you have your security grille completely open. This puts you in control, and reduces risks of tampering or trapped fingers, as you’ll need a key to lower the security grille track when it is attached to the grille stack. This is especially handy when you consider younger children who might not know any better than to try and move the security grille track.

LIFT OUT TRACKS FOR RETRACTABLE SECURITY GRILLES

The alternative to a lift up grille track is a lift out grille track. This means the security grille track removes completely when the security grille is not in use, so you can store the track elsewhere safely out of the way. You can choose lift up tracks when purchasing our CX1, CX2 and Elite security grilles. For our Elite security grilles, we refer to these tracks as removable security grille tracks.

It’s important to note that if you choose a lift up or lift out security grille track on a security rated grille, these additional tracks do not meet the requirements of the security specifications. If you require a security grille that maintains a security rating while also preventing the bottom track from becoming a tripping hazard in doorways, you can always look at having a recessed track installed.

RECESSED TRACKS FOR RETRACTABLE SECURITY GRILLES

The recessed track is a great option for security grilles. If you choose this option for CX1 or CX2 security grilles, the recessed security grille track will be laid into a floor channel with a track cover on top of it to create an even surface. Recessed tracks are ideal for removing any health and safety concerns when security grilles are installed in doorways.

The Extendor Vulcan security grilles and Extendor Eclipse security grilles are also available with this type of track option. These high-end security grilles are unrivalled and mainly considered where protection is needed to the highest levels, for instance within the government sector.

Our Extendor Vulcan security grille is security rated level 2, while our Eclipse security grille is the strongest grille on the market at security rating 3. If you require maximum protection for your high-value goods, you may consider implementing these robust security grilles.
