Security grilles for all-round security: don’t get caught out

GOOD SECURITY LASTS: SECURITY GRILLES ARE THE OPTIMAL CHOICE FOR SECURE PREMISES, ALL YEAR ROUND

Did you know that yesterday, 7th July, was classed as the worst day for theft to occur? So, it’s also a good time to start thinking about good security from hereon in!

Good domestic and business security lasts a lifetime and gives you the peace of mind you deserve, which is why Cross-Guard’s security grilles are fit for purpose. Durable with limited maintenance requirements, these sturdy security grilles will keep your home and business secure.

Rain or shine, security needs to be in place. While winter months offer privacy for thieves to access your premises in cover of dark, the summer months are often worse for theft, due to opportunists taking advantage of the doors and windows you leave open to welcome that summer breeze. That’s where security grilles come in to combat common burglars, as they allow you to have open doors and windows, while still having good security in place.

Below, you’ll find Cross-Guard’s infographic on top tips to secure your home against burglars. Take a look and print yourself a copy if it helps you secure your premises (you can also use some of the tips for business security). Our aim is to reduce the amount of people falling victim of theft by encouraging the best security practices.

TIPS ON HOME SECURITY: INFOGRAPHIC

SECURING YOUR HOME IN SUMMER

Our infographic above summarises some key points, but here are some expanded tips on home security and how window and door security grilles can help you.

HIGH-SECURITY GRILLES FOR WINDOWS AND DOORS DURING THE WARM WEATHER: A SECURITY SOLUTION BY CROSS-GUARD

Our security grilles are a robust physical barrier that separates intruders from your home and keeps them outside, without stopping any free flow of air in the summer. This allows you to enjoy a breeze and keep cool, while still securing your home against theft. We offer a broad range of aesthetically pleasing steel security grilles that can blend in with your existing décor, while proving to be effective anti-theft and anti-terror measures. Take a look at our security grille range to find a secure grille that suits your needs.

IMPLEMENT SECURITY GRILLES ALONGSIDE OTHER PHYSICAL SECURITY BARRIERS TO MAKE YOUR HOME EXTRA SECURE AND TO PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES

Other common security barriers include gates, garden fences, and strong doors/windows that are closed and locked where possible. Remember, thieves take advantage most of properties where they consider security to be weak, so they can exploit vulnerabilities.

If you do invest in a garden fence, we suggest using open chain-link or ornamental metal fencing, ideally secured into concrete to prevent any lifting. This means the fence doesn’t disguise the visibility of the thief from prying eyes, and you can always add extra security by including pointed fence tops or rough barbed wire.

SECURE VALUABLES BY COVERING THEM WITH BLINDS/CURTAINS

If you have valuables on display or in clear view of your window, consider moving them where possible. You can also draw curtains or blinds at night or when the property is unoccupied. This is a form of indirect security that will make you house a less likely target in the first place.

SECURE TOOLS, TOYS, LADDERS, AND OTHER EXPENSIVE ITEMS IN A SHED OR GARAGE

Ensure you don’t leave these items laying around in your garden. Expensive items can be quickly and easily swiped by a thief and there is not any effort even required to break in. You’ve also got to consider whether insurers will pay out for these items as you didn’t take the right measures to keep them secure and hidden. While it’s a loss to have items such as toys stolen from your garden, it also give the thief cause to also break into your home as they may assume based on the toys that your house is filled with further entertainment such as tablets. Ladders in the garden, on the other hand, may give opportunistic burglars the tool they need to access your house through upper windows.

USE A HOME SAFE OR LOCKBOX FOR THE SECURITY OF VALUABLES

If using a security safe, remember not to use a predictable password or keep the passcode anywhere in your home that would be easily accessible to a burglar. There are many types of secure safes available commercially, but you should consider having one that can bolt into the floor, as burglars sometimes choose to take smaller safes with them if they are not mounted or secured.

DON’T LABEL SETS OF KEYS AND DON’T HIDE ANY KEYS OUTSIDE WHERE THEY ARE UNSECURED

If your keys are lost or stolen while you’re out and about, and the keys are labelled with information like your name or address, this could mean big trouble for the security of your home. In addition, hiding your keys out in the yard near your home is not a good idea. Thieves are aware of common hiding places such as under mats or rocks, so they will look there to find your keys and gain access to your property. As an alternative, you may consider leaving a spare key with a trusted neighbour or acquaintance, or potentially using a high-security lockbox hidden in a discrete area of the property.

INSTALL A CCTV SECURITY SYSTEM

Many surveys focus on the benefits of CCTV in deterring burglars from breaking into your home. There is data to prove that security cameras act as a good deterrent as many burglars won’t want to be caught on tape.

AVOID COMPROMISING SECURITY BY ADVERTISING YOUR HOLIDAY ON SOCIAL MEDIA

You may like to splash your upcoming vacation all over social media to express your excitement and to make your peers a tad bit envious, but it’s not a good idea. Putting this information out there where burglars can access it is a security risk. How well do you really know all those on your social media feed? It’s fairly common for burglaries to be committed by someone close to the victim of the break-in. Remember, a burglar often assesses your situation, including your comings and goings, and will most likely invade your home when they know you won’t be in.
